Black Lives Matter
The San Mateo County Psychological Association (SMCPA) joins the voices of American citizens, businesses and other organizations in speaking out against all forms of racism, discrimination and violence. We have been deeply saddened and outraged by the murders of George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor and many others. We are also outraged by the systematic racism that continues to perpetuate racial disparity and inequality in this country. As psychologists, we aspire to act in accordance with the principles of beneficence and nonmaleficence, fidelity and responsibility, integrity, justice, and respect for people’s rights and dignity - not only with our clients, but also with the communities in which we work and society as a whole. In this long history of injustice and pain, the time for change is long overdue.
The SMCPA stands in solidarity with those who have been impacted by police brutality and racial discrimination and those speaking out about these injustices. We are also called to act.
Below are some ways SMCPA is committed to raising awareness and understanding of racism, increasing dialog in our community, and creating meaningful action as an organization.
SMCPA will:
-
Create a forum for talking about diversity issues
-
Provide clinical and general resources to help educate, support diversity, and foster healing
-
Provide resources for diversity clinical trainings
-
Prioritize adding a Diversity Chair to join the SMCPA Board
Please stay tuned as we endeavor to fulfill all of these commitments. Now more than ever, together we can get through this.
If you are inspired to help with any of the above, please email us at president@smcpa.org. We would love your help!
Yours,
The SMCPA Board
